I was browsing Facebook when I found this link to theworldsgreatestbook.com.
As a child of the 1960’s (I must have been – I don’t remember being there), I was startled by this discussion.
Am I the only person here that still inserts two spaces after the full stop (period)?
:O

When I was taught to type in high school was when I was taught to space twice after a period. Last year I came across a similar article that basically informed me I was a dinosaur if I still double-spaced. Yikes! Dino status wasn’t something I wanted so I taught myself to single-space, which was easier than I’d expected. So now no dino status for me…maybe sabertooth kitty, but I can live with that.

I can live with being labelled as a Megalosaurus!
But I need to do the same as you and mend my Jurassic ways.

I’m of the same generation, but was never taught to use two spaces after a full stop. Interestingly, the French still do as standard. I wonder if there’s a regional influence of any kind, dating back over the centuries?

Interesting point. I was educated in Scotland, so considering the Franco-Scottish connection, this could make sense.

However, my significant other was also educated in Scotland and she uses only one space…so that’s my theory in tatters. 😦

As a librarian who helps students write proper MLA style, it has been shocking to see this trend emerge.

I did learn to type that way in high school, but after my first middle-aged grad paper got lambasted for such an archaic practice, I unlearned the habit.

After being published on a public blog and being told that it’s now ‘not done’ I’ve been trying to stop. It’s a hard habit to break! Now I have an entire novel to fix. 😛

I am in the same boat… Search and finding thousands of sentences can be a major chore.
I have to remind myself that I am now moving into the 21st century and getting one more thing correct. 😀

I did for a long time, but have since trained myself out of it. I learned to type on a manual typewriter and I still occasionally use one: a beautiful Underwood Quiet Tab Deluxe, which sits on my desk next to my laptop. 🙂

I always double space after a period. It’s the way I was taught.

Me too…although I cannot remember for the life of me who taught me or when. I wasn’t taught to type in school – there was only one computer…which I was banned from using because I ‘spent too much time’ on it.
One computer…sheesh!

You are not. I also hit the space bar twice after a colon. 🙂
