On October 17th, 2012, I clicked a button marked ‘Upload’ and sat back, nervously awaiting the delivery of a stream of electronic information to Amazon KDP. Twelve hours later, ‘A Construct of Angels’ was live and I realised that I had finally achieved my dream – to complete a novel and put it up for sale.
Thirty-seven years ago, I could never have dreamed that in this future age of flying cars, silver jumpsuits and daily trips to the Moon, my book would exist only as data and that it would be held in storage in a distant country. Readers would only have to tap it with their finger if they wanted to select, pay for and read it.
Cool.
I am still working to make the paperback version a reality, but with the recent bout of editing that I have subjected the poor thing to, that particular realisation has been delayed yet again. Configuring an electronic (Word-based) template with paragraphs, page breaks, chapters and the odd image isn’t as straightforward as it ought to be. *frowns* It’s now back with my new editor, Tara, after receiving some swathing cuts, including the complete removal of two characters.
In some ways, I hardly seem to have moved on at all. I am still editing and I really need to put A Construct of Angels to bed and pick up the sequel. But it will haunt me if my first book isn’t the best it can possibly be. Only when that’s sorted, can I let it go…
However, as I mentioned in a previous post, One Year On, a great deal has changed for me in the last twelve months (plus I now have 300 followers – who’d have thought?) and I still can’t quite believe how much has been crammed into such a short space of time. I can only wonder what the next twelve months will bring, although I can’t imagine them being as crazy as the last twelve. The learning curve, I feel, is no longer as steep as it has been and for that, I am grateful. 🙂
Regular readers will know that my job sends me all around the UK. Well, by sheer chance, this week happens to have landed me back at the exact same desk from where I uploaded my book, one year ago. I am experiencing an eerie sense of deja vu – again.
It’s another reminder of what’s changed. If I could borrow Sandra Bullock’s time-travelling postbox (The Lake House), I would send my past self a message that says ‘hang on to your hat.’
Not that I wear a hat. I’m not Terry Pratchett. 🙂
Anyway, until Tara has finished looking over my new edits, I’m hoping to press on with the sequel, ‘A Vengeance of Angels.’ I’d really liked to have completed it, one year on, but life has a peculiar way of rearranging even the best-laid plans of mice and authors.

Happy Anniversary! I feel your pain. With RC&R, me and createspace have been going rounds for the paperback. The eversion was published in March. I started with the paperback on June 6th and it’s still not ready. After having a ANOTHER final edit, I just sent the last MS to them for publication. I know that it is not the best product that I can produce, but it IS the best that I can produce with THIS novel. There will be a next time. I applaud you for taking the time to get the best product out there. That speaks volumes on your passion for both writing well and pleasing the reader, and that’s what it is all about.

Thank you for dropping by! 😀
Yes, it can be frustrating, can’t it? I think I got my proof copy in May and I’m still tweaking it. Now I have a host of new edits to apply which will mess up the page spacing all over again. 😥 All you can do is your best and then move on, perhaps to return at a later date…

Congratulations from one who’s still languishing on the becalmed seas of the final edit. The fourth final edit.
Push on to the paperback! I hear it’s a feeling like no other, having your first novel actually in your hands.
And buy a hat, I think it would suit you.

But what sort of hat? Terry wears a large fedora, which would be useful for keeping off the rain (or sun, one day a year), but I would always be knocking it off in doorways.
Perhaps I ought to try a bowler, a la Rene Magritte, although I understand that might involve wearing an apple-shaped mask. Hmm.

Are you keeping track of your progress at the gym? In a year’s time you may be very proud of what you’ve achieved. No pressure, but we all want to hear that you are feeling better and fitter and that you are closer to being the next Gisele Bundchen. 😉

Hahahaha thank you for this– and yes, I’ve been tracking my menial progress at the gym. I even have a little system of rewards set in place for every little achievement. The stick does not work on me, but the carrot? I’ll bust my arse for the carrot.
Watch out, Gisele. Except not really. Haha.

Congrats!!! I totally know what you mean with the whole feeling as if the book will never be finished. When I sent in the Imminent Danger manuscript to be published, I sat back, crossed my arms, and was like, “This is IT. 7 years of writing and re-writing DONE. I am NEVER touching this thing again!” And now I’m thinking about re-releasing it as a non-iUniverse ebook, and I went back and read the book, and lo and behold there are like 50 things at the least I want to change. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

About the changes? Nothing big, just minor wording stuff. Adding commas and such. I might add in a little more description of assorted alien environs to give each setting more oomph. We’ll see. Although nothing big like you’re doing, with the whole chopping out two characters thing! I look forward to reading the revised version 🙂 How much shorter do you think that will make the book?

Surprisingly not that much shorter. Some dialogue has to be given to another character (changing their personality slightly). Remember Angus, the horrible boss? Gone. The grumpy wife that hated Sara? Gone. I know what you mean about the small changes, though. A re-read after six months can throw up a lot of small necessary’fixes.’ But that can mean you’ve improved in that time and are now a better writer. 🙂
Imagine re-reading it every year. Tweaks for life!

Good God I hope not. Once this re-release is done … the only reason I’m re-reading Imminent Danger is to fact check. Or I may re-read some of my favorite scenes just for fun. But no more edits!!! (Spoiler alert: the editing will never end)
